Bees are the only insects that produce food eaten by humans. They live in one of nature’s finest social communities – colonies where every bee has specific role. Their life is truly fascinating.
- It takes twelve bees to make a single teaspoon of honey
- The average worker bee produces about 1/12th teaspoon of honey in her lifetime
- A hive of bees will fly 90,000 miles, the equivalent of three orbits around the earth to collect 1 kg of honey
- It takes somewhere in the region of a million flower visits to make one jar of honey
- It takes about three weeks for a bee to grow from egg to adult
- A colony of bees consists of 20,000-80,000 honeybees and one queen. Worker honey bees are female, live for about 6 weeks and do all the work
- Bees have two separate stomachs; one for food and another just for nectar
- Bees communicate by smells called ‘pheromones’ and by performing special ‘dances’
- Honey stored in air tight containers never spoils. Sealed honey vats found in tombs still contained edible honey, despite over 2,000 years beneath the sands
- A queen is the largest bee in the hive. She can lay up to 2,000 eggs per day, twice her own body weight per day
- The honeybee’s wings stroke 11,400 times per minute, thus making their distinctive buzz
- Nurse bees work inside the hive. Their job is to make royal jelly, feed and clean the larvae, queen and drones
- One bee colony can produce up to 150kg of honey per year
- The male honey bees (also called drones), have no stinger and do no work at all
- Each honey bee colony has a unique odor for members’ identification
- Only worker bees sting, and only if they feel threatened and they die once they sting. Queens have a stinger, but they don’t leave the hive to help defend it
- Royal Jelly is powerful, milky substance that turns an ordinary bee into a Queen Bee
- Drones have one sole purpose: to mate with the Queen Bee
- Bees see all colors except the color red
- More than 70 of the 100 crops that provide 90% of the world’s food are pollinated by bees
